About Laura
I'm Laura, and I'm in the process of completing my PGDE in teaching physics with science. Before this, I have completed a PhD in physics, with SOFI CDT at the University of Edinburgh. Previously I've completed a Master in Science at Queen Mary, University of London, as well as A Levels in Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry.
In addition I have spent one year between my degrees as a research assistant at the University of Cambridge.
My experience has given me an eye for detail in physics, and a deep understanding allowing me to break things up into smaller, more digestible pieces of information. Along with this, I have learned how to communicate science to a wide range of abilities, and age groups, from primary school children to fellow PhDs or experts in my field.
This communication has been where my passion in science has always been, which became clear during my PhD. My best moments were enthusiastically discussing physics research with my peers, which often involved one of us explaining unfamiliar concepts to the other.
Even before my academic career, I've always loved maths and science, as it is a window into how the world really works. As a subject, I enjoy how logical it is, and how step-by-step there is often a clear answer. I'm enjoying my studies into better teaching, and I love engaging with people, and sharing my interest in these subjects with others.
I've been tutoring for a bit more than a year now, and have taught for over 400 hours. I find it a fun and rewarding experience to gently disentangle confusion in physics and maths. I have a conversational style when discussing how to approach a question, and as previously mentioned, can break it down into smaller parts to help the student learn how to solve problems.
My previous experience includes 13 weeks of placement with schools, two semesters of demonstrating maths tutorials in first year physics in the University of Edinburgh, as well as first year labs at both the University of Edinburgh and the University of Cambridge.
At this time I am only offering online tutoring.
My other hobbies include playing the piano and indoor rock climbing.

I vary my teaching style depending on whether I am teaching a topic for the first time, or offering a lesson to revise and practise a topic. When I'm teaching for the first time, I go through things slowly, step by step before going through examples. This is followed by example questions when there is time, depending on the size of the topic.
When offering a lesson to practise, I prepare example questions and offer support to help my students work out the answers themselves. I do this by providing hints and asking questions where needed.
Generally I teach in a conversational way

Perfect! She was very helpful for our son, who achieved the maximum grade at GCSE with her help.

I supervised Laura while she completed her PhD in Physics. She graduated in 2019 with her PhD from the University of Edinburgh.
During her studies she carried out research as part of several collaborations and was heavily involved in teaching within Edinburgh University. She is a careful and successful teacher who arrives for class fully prepared.
After completing her research with me - she went on to train as a school teacher also at the University of Edinburgh.I wish to recommend Laura to you without reservation. Her academic qualifications and subject knowledge are excellent. She is very good at explaining her subject to others in a way which furthers their understanding. In addition, she is well organised, conscientious and empathetic. She works hard at whatever she does. I have known Laura for almost 20 years and I believe she has the background and personality to make her an excellent tutor.
