My pedagogical specialties include the Core Knowledge approach, advocated by E.D. Hirsch, with the aim of establishing a broad knowledge base enabled by close-readings and annotation of on-level texts. I supplement this emphasis on a broad knowledge base with Socratic Questioning/Paideia Discussion, and literary annotation.
A typical lesson entails, first, a Learning Target or clear Objective that the student should be capable of performing by the lesson's end.
What sets me apart as a tutor is my broad range of knowledge spanning the humanities, as well as my discussion-based teaching methods, and emphasis on direct assessment in the tutoring session. For history, humanities, philosophy, and literature look no further!
Here's a Sample Lesson:
Objective: Explain Euthyphro's Dilemma in writing using content specific vocabulary (philosophy)
Opening:
Verbal Review of Academic Vocabulary- Dialogue, Dilemma, Piety, Contradiction, Argument, Premises, Conclusion, Aporia
Student will reference their notes to give functional definitions to the tutor in regards to the pertinent academic vocabulary. When a definition is inadequate, teacher will question the student to guide them towards any missing element. e.g. if the given example is "An argument is something you say is true" teacher may ask
"Isn't it the case that arguments have parts? Which part is the part you are demonstrating is true? Which parts support the conclusion? How is this statement connected to the conclusion?"
Activity:
Assisted Close-Read,
Teacher will read excerpts from Plato's "Euthyphro" alongside the student, clarifying the claim of Euthyphro and questioning of Socrates. Student will be prompted to annotate sections in which the argument is presented using the academic vocabulary. Meanwhile, the teacher will present the excerpts in an engaging and descriptive manner, highlighting tone, voices, characters, and literary elements to maintain interest.
Assignment:
Writing Prompt- "How does the Euthyphro dilemma present a challenge to the idea that morality is grounded in religion? Explain the implications of both sides, whether "Is something morally-good because it is commanded by the gods or is what is morally good commanded by the gods because it is good?" Support your answer with reasoning and examples.
