About Erika

I have been teaching for eleven years in the New York City public school system as a high school teacher. I teach in a high needs school, with many students who struggle due to their unfortunate socio-economic status. I currently teach juniors and seniors, but have experience teaching freshmen and sophomores as well. I teach five classes a day, with approximately thirty-four students in each class. I also spend time after school tutoring them as well. My students have achieved mastery on their state history exams, many with grades of 85% or higher.

About the lesson

I am an experienced and certified New York City public school teacher, specializing in history and social sciences at the middle and high school level. I hold an undergraduate degree in political science, as well as a master's in education, with a focus on adolescent education. I taught world history for five years, U.S. History for the past six years, and Advance Placement (college level) American Government and Politics for the past three years. I think my students would describe me as an energetic and passionate about what I teach. I believe that students don't necessarily learn from simple lectures. Rather, I provide them with tools to access content themselves, and help to facilitate through the process. I also feel that students learn best through engaging discussion about topics they are learning. Through that process, I believe my students comprehend what they learn, and learning becomes more authentic and tangible for them, and less about simple memorization. This is really important as a history teacher, because the reason to learn history is so that we are not apt to repeat it.
