I believe effective teaching begins with assessing the social/emotional needs of my students. Academic success is found in direct relationship to addressing personal needs alongside academic needs. This is true for ALL students but especially for students with learning differences who may have lost trust in the school setting.
Students learn in a variety of ways. Effective instruction also includes a variety of learning modalities. There are 4 learning modalities: Visual, Auditory, Kinesthetic and Tactile. Some students learn best through one modality and worse through others. Many students use multiple different modalities to learn effectively.
I am an experienced and effective special education teacher. Before I retired was both a part-time pastor and special ed teacher. My experience with Southwestern City Schools incorporated multi modality methods working with students one-on-one or group of two as well as a classroom of about 20 students. Effective teaching methods brought about success where there was not previously success.

I provided one-on-one instruction or in a small group as a supplement to the regular classroom breaking down content area to specific components and presenting it in a visual, auditory, or kinesthetic way that promoted understanding and met the needs of the student(s).
At Marburn Academy I helped students with learning disabilities learn math skills that satisfied minimum state standards and provided a foundation for job related math skills. In addition I received training in Orton Gillingham reading techniques that remediated reading skills through a phonetic approach. Orton Gillingham is highly effective and resulted in reading success for students who had not previously been successful.
