About Emma
As a saxophone teacher with a strong background in classical performance, I approach each lesson with the goal of blending technical mastery with expressive interpretation. I believe the classical saxophone offers a rich and underappreciated world of repertoire, tone color, and nuance, and I strive to help students develop the skills they need to explore it with confidence. Technique is the bedrock of my instruction. Lessons regularly include tone development through long tones and overtone exercises, scale and arpeggio drills, articulation patterns, and sight-reading practice. I also work on hand position and breath support to ensure students can play with comfort and control. Advanced students work on altissimo register, vibrato, and extended techniques as appropriate to their level. Repertoire selection is guided by both skill-building and musical exploration. Students study concert pieces, études, transcriptions, and ensemble music. I help them learn how to interpret markings, shape phrases, and convey emotion, so they don’t just play notes—they bring music to life. I also teach music theory alongside each piece, helping students understand harmonic context and stylistic interpretation. To prevent lessons from becoming rigid, I include creative elements like guided improvisation and simple composition exercises. These activities encourage flexibility and musical intuition, even for students who primarily focus on classical genres. Students are also introduced to recording techniques and performance preparation strategies, including mock auditions and stage presence. A particularly inspiring teaching moment for me was helping a student prepare for a state-level solo and ensemble competition. We dissected every aspect of their chosen piece, from tone color to articulation precision. The result was not just a superior rating, but a sense of deep pride and accomplishment. My teaching is goal-oriented and student-driven, balancing structure with support. Whether students are working toward college auditions, school ensembles, or personal enrichment, I provide them with the tools, encouragement, and discipline to succeed.

As a saxophone educator, I view teaching as a collaborative journey where students and I explore the vast landscape of jazz together. My approach is rooted in the belief that every student possesses a unique musical voice, and it's my role to help them discover and refine it.
I emphasize the importance of strong technical foundations—such as tone production, breath control, articulation, and finger dexterity—as these are essential for expressive playing. However, technique alone is not enough; I also focus on developing a deep musical ear, encouraging students to actively listen to the nuances of the music they play.
Ear training is integrated into every lesson, helping students recognize intervals, chords, and progressions, which in turn enhances their improvisational skills. Improvisation is at the heart of my teaching philosophy. I guide students through the process of creating spontaneous music by understanding scales, modes, and chord changes, and by developing their personal musical language. We explore the works of jazz legends, analyzing their solos to understand their phrasing, articulation, and emotional expression.
I also incorporate technology into lessons, using recording software and play-along tracks to facilitate practice and self-assessment. One of the most rewarding aspects of teaching is witnessing a student's growth from tentative improvisation to confident, expressive solos. I strive to create a learning environment where students feel safe to take risks, make mistakes, and ultimately find their voice as musicians.
