About Karen

I have been teaching mathematics and science for more than 15 years, and have taught thousands of students from New York, Massachusetts, California, New Jersey, and the Caribbean. My primary-school students pass rigorous exams and gain entry to very competitive middle-schools. Those primary-school students who sought me out because they were failing mathematics have turned their grades around. High-school students have passed their Regents math and science exams after failing the first time around. Others have been accepted to pre-Med programs at top universities, despite their school's recommendation that they apply to colleges that do not require the SAT. Under my tutelage, these student defied the results of predictive tests and performed so well as to gain entry to schools like Cornell University, Harvard, Rutgers, and Johns Hopkins. As a graduate student at MIT, I served as a Teaching Assistant (TA) for the undergraduate class "Circuits and Electronics".

As a former Admissions Officer at one of the top engineering colleges in the world, I am uniquely positioned to teach my students the mindset and the skill-set necessary to be competitive applicants. Each lesson is a learning opportunity where these skills are implemented and tested from primary school through high school. Learning to calculate is just the beginning.

My teaching method is mostly student-centered. 70% of my students are primary through middle-school (pre-high-school), while 30% are high-school juniors and seniors seeking to correct deficits in preparation for college admission or to prepare for ACT and SAT, including Subject Tests.

Sessions are tailored to students' specific needs, so I prefer individualized instruction and small groups of 3 to 5 students. Math students should learn basics of SCRATCH or Python because one way of testing deep conceptual knowledge is to be capable of teaching a computer to do it. All students learn PowerPoint and how to give a presentation.

The typical session starts out with fluency practice, an exercise that activates the student's prior knowledge of procedures and concepts. This is followed by student presentation of select homework problems, explaining concepts, math rules, reasoning, diagrams, and heuristic application of thinking skills. There will be questions and feedback from me; if this is a small-group session, there will be questions and feedback from peers. New material is then introduced by me, including modeling of a problem-solving strategy applied to example problems. Material may be chunked for maximum discussion of concepts and inter-relationships, coupled with metacongnition -- out-loud thinking of what I am thinking, the interpretation of a problem statement, why a rule applies, and why particular rules do not. Homework is assigned.

On quiz days, the entire session is dedicated to the quiz, and homework is assigned.

Small-group special project week is collaborative, while individual students' special project week is research-based. Students focus on a specific math topic, how it is used in medicine, technology, engineering, art, and the social sciences. All students learn how to conduct web-based research and evaluate websites.

Cancellation Policy:

My focus is on students having the right mindset to do well in mathematics. Setting priorities, organization, and managing one's time are some of the soft skills necessary for success. The message must always be that the lesson is important. Part of of our session includes how to deal with productive struggle, procrastination, and anxiety, so please do not let any of these things be the reason for not showing up to class. In the beginning, please book 1 or 2 sessions at a time to allow me and the student to get to know each other better.

Students must cancel at least 24 hours of the session, and with the intent of rescheduling the lesson.
