About Makamae

I enjoy working with students to help them develop their confidence and potential academically, which then impacts students to believe in themselves in every aspect of life. I have over 250 hours of volunteer tutoring experience in 6 different learning/classroom environments. I also have over 100 hours of paid tutoring experience. Finally, I have over 1000 hours of teaching experience in whole group, small group, and one-on-one one classroom settings. I enjoy working with kids, and I am open to tutoring through zoom or google meets as well!

About the lesson

I believe that an education prepares students for experiences in the real world. Through an education, students are prepared for experiences outside of school and in their future. I believe that for students to be equipped for experiences in the outside world, the teacher needs to nurture and guide students. Teachers need to recognize students’ accomplishments, and build students’ confidence in themselves and students creativity. Teachers need to provide educational equity to all their students so every student has what they need to succeed. Students should be given equal opportunities to excel in the classroom, so they see themselves as being able to excel in their futures in and outside of the classroom.
I believe that the teachers should respect the ideas shared by students, and that students should be respected for who they are in the classroom. Students interests, beliefs, and personalities are valued and important. Teachers should promote constructive relationships with students and between students that equitably engage learners. Students should be actively involved in creating and managing and safe and respectful learning environment with each other because every students’ ideas and beliefs are valuable and worthy.
I believe that content should be taught in a way that encourages student engagement. For the learning experience to be valuable to students, students need to be able to connect and relate to the material. Students need to find the content interesting, and when the teacher incorporates the students’ community, cultural, and personal assets into the content, students will have a valuable learning experience, and will be engaged in the content. Students should also be given opportunities in class to share connections from what they have learned to their own lives, and opportunities to discuss connections between the content and their own lives and experiences. Students should be encouraged to make connections with the learning to their prior knowledge and other academic subjects.
I believe that students should see themselves as mathematicians, historians, scientists, writers, and experts in any field that they are studying in the classroom. To do this, the teacher should integrate specific methods of instruction. Teachers should pursue a problem solving, inquiry approach in the classroom. Students should be challenged to think critically, solve problems, and challenge their own assumptions in their learning. Teachers should probe students to think deeply and support their assertions with evidence.
