About Barbara

My name is Elaine Berger, I have a degree in Elementary education and Special Education from Texas State. As for my experience, I have taught in an emotionally disturbed classroom where I taught k-5 grades. The students ranged from not knowing their letters or numbers to high functioning gifted students, all in one classroom. I have also taught 5th grade Math, Science and Social Studies as well as 7th grade math. In 2000 I had my first of three daughters and became a stay at home mom. During the time that I have not had my own classroom I have done tutoring and substituting. I love to teach and help kids learn and be successful. I charge $40 an hour. However, I with younger children I may not use the entire hour depending on what you want them to be tutored in and how long their attention span is. I only tutor one child at a time.

About the lesson

I love to teach and catch students up to be at the level of their peers. I have the ability to quickly regain your child’s attention by changing things up as to not waste time. I use a lot of manipulatives during my tutoring due to my Special Education background, I feel most children learn better when they use multiple senses as well. I only tutor one child at a time. This includes tutoring special needs children as well. The purpose of tutoring is identifying the need for the extra help, filling in the gaps to help a student move on with the skills needed for them to be successful on their own. I explain it best with the visualization of building a pyramid with building blocks. If you leave any of the blocks out of the pyramid the entire pyramid would crumble. This is my job to find the blocks (concepts not mastered) that are missing repair them by teaching the concepts and how it effects the pyramid as a whole to strengthen the pyramid and have the student able to move on and be successful on their own. I only tutor in math, However, I have tutored 3rd graders that have not taken the STAAR test before or students that have failed the 5th grade STAAR math and need to prepare for the retest in order to pass to move on to 6th grade. I only tutor at my house or online if you have the technology for me to do so.
