About Courtney

I strive to get to know each student independently. I help my students assume responsibility for monitoring their own behavior and to establish productive work habits through my management techniques. My teaching environment encourages individual students to hold themselves and one another accountable for learning. I establish this type of environment by generating shared goals and expectations during the very first weeks of our time together. I then establish a learning community that is safe and promotes responsible risks. I do this by utilizing community-building activities such as interactive modeling, daily greetings, and restorative justice circles, as applicable/needed. These activities ensure that I foster positive social relationships, consistent motivation, and high levels of engagement. I consistently work to create and maintain a learning environment that encourages respect, empathy, and a commitment to learning. I feel strongly that each student learns differently and that as a professional educator, it is my job to find out how each student learns. Based on this information, I foster a classroom environment that encourages and supports various learning styles. I create a positive atmosphere in my tutoring setting by establishing clear expectations for appropriate behavior to optimize learning.

I am beyond passionate about teaching! I am knowledgeable about best practices, committed to student learning, reflective, engaging and driven. I am skilled at providing small group and one-on-one interventions and differentiating my instruction to meet individual student needs. I can assure you that I have high expectations for every lesson that I plan and appropriately rigorous criteria for student success.

I have nineteen years of teaching experience in grades in first-fourth. I have a master's degree in Curriculum & Instruction and a Reading Specialist license from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I have extensive background on aligning curriculum and instruction to the Science of Reading. I am skilled at teaching all subjects including but not limited to: reading, writing, math and science at the elementary school level.
