About James

I have completed a BA Primary Education (QTS) degree at Nottingham Trent University achieving a 2:1 final grade. The course has allowed me to complete placements in a wide range of schools across Nottingham, responding to the needs of numerous children. In addition, I’ve attended many wider educational settings to help form my teaching philosophy such as the National Holocaust Centre. Furthermore, the course has placed value on Inclusive practice and educational theory, as well as enhancing my professional development through working with a variety of children. I'm a 22 year old Newly Qualified Teacher based in Failsworth. My teaching experience led me to achieving a 'very good' grade in my final placement with particular strengths in planning, assessing and behaviour management. I do have a DBS, as this was needed throughout my course, however I have clicked 'No' on the profile due to the fact I'm in the process of ordering a new DBS certificate due to the fact that I need to have a hard copy available for my future ambition of becoming a full time primary teacher. In terms of my teaching style, I believe in giving children control and responsibility of their learning. This is often shown through giving children an element of choice over the activity we do as I believe this is more likely to result in children having an enjoyment of their learning which is pivotal as children get older, whilst also helping develop their independence. Children's learning needs to be active, engaging and interactive rather than children simply doing a worksheet, and I often show this through my use of mini-activities with children which are short, exciting and use resources children really enjoy, such as IT when appropriate. I am one of the most experienced Newly Qualified Teachers around, due to the length of my degree and due to the wide range of experiences I've had and the range of children I've taught, with lots of these children having English as an Additional Language. In terms of my tutoring journey, I've had experience working with a young boy, with a focus on teaching English which I class as my specialism. In particular I sought to improve this Year 3 boy's handwriting and sentence structure. I consistently tried to find the balance between humour and firmness when working with the child, and as a result the child resonated with me on a personal basis, whilst also respected me as a teacher, therefore producing excellent progress from the child.
