About Alastair
AS OF DEC 24 I AM NOW FULLY BOOKED FOR TUTORING, APOLOGIES. After spending 18 years as a Police-Officer, I decided that I wanted a career change. I finished a degree in General Engineering in October 2022 and I have been tutoring since halfway through this degree (I have now left the police force to become an engineer). I also have a BSc in Biosciences.
I loved the content of my engineering degree so much that I wanted to help and inspire others and I began tutoring for free in schools, which I continue to this day. Tutoring comes naturally to me after my experience from being an instructor in the police, where I taught new recruits along with first aid and other subjects. I've got loads of patience and I most enjoy helping those who have had a problem motivating themselves to study in the past.

UPDATE DEC 2024 - I'M CURRENTLY FULLY BOOKED
I have been tutoring since mid 2020 which all started as a volunteer tutor for disadvantaged children. I very much enjoy finding out about my student and the first session will always be used to help define what the student wants help with and what exams they are planning to sit (hence why the first session is always free). Then I will go away and come up with a simple plan of action!
Often sessions will involve making sure that the fundamental piece of theory is understood properly and exam questions are practised. All while making things as fun and interesting as possible and trying to explain things in a way which makes theory relatable to real life. Typical lessons will then be 1 - 1.5 hours.
The price is the same however long a session takes. I can visit a student's place or teach online. All options are possible, from just a couple of sessions - to once a week for the next two years! Unfortunately I no longer offer A level maths. I used to, but I feel I'm a bit too out of practice with it now to be able to give a top quality service.
I'm happy to travel within around 20km of Haslemere, or perhaps slightly further.
I also have a current DBS certificate as well as a current enhanced DBS certificate.
As a little friendly advice, I would thoroughly recommend tutoring for anyone who is not simply a straight 'A' student. A tutor can help to improve confidence, give a different perspective from a teacher, be a safe space to ask questions that a student doesn't want to in class and generally provide a more relaxed 1-on-1 environment than at school. It is better to try a tutor for a few sessions then decide it's not for your or your child, than leave things until March before GCSEs or A levels and to be worrying about the upcoming exams. If after reading my profile you don't think I would be right for you or your child, then I still wish you the best of luck! Try searching for a tutor who may be a little older and seem as if they may have some patience and experience with instructing. This is much more useful than a tutor that knows everything but can't explain it well.
