About Derek
I’ve spent more than 15 years helping students succeed in math, chemistry, and physics — first in the classroom, and now as a devoted tutor. My path to tutoring started in an unexpected place: environmental engineering. After earning my B.S. from Gonzaga University, I volunteered as a teacher in the Marshall Islands for two years and quickly discovered that education was my real calling.
When I returned home, I earned my Master in Teaching degree from Seattle University and completed a decade teaching in public and private schools in Washington State. During that time, I taught subjects including algebra, geometry, chemistry, and physics, introduced a new honors chemistry curriculum, and worked with students from diverse learning backgrounds — from high achievers to those struggling to pass.
Since 2019, I’ve been tutoring full-time, working with students across Alberta, the U.S., and beyond. I specialize in breaking down complex concepts into clear, manageable steps, adapting my approach to each student’s needs, and relating new ideas to those the student already has so that it can be fully integrated. I’ve helped middle and high school students prepare for Alberta Diploma Exams, Grade 9 PAT, and college entrance tests like the SAT and PSAT, as well as supported college students through challenging STEM courses.
My philosophy is simple:

-Build confidence through understanding
-Maintain consistency for steady progress
Outside of tutoring, I’m deeply rooted in family life — my wife and I are raising five children, each with their own unique personalities, learning styles, and challenges. Watching them grow has given me firsthand insight into how different kids respond to encouragement, structure, and problem-solving. It’s a daily reminder that learning isn’t one-size-fits-all — and that’s exactly the mindset I bring to every student I work with.

Whether your student needs help catching up, prepping for exams, or making sense of day-to-day assignments, I offer flexible, personalized tutoring that meets them where they are. I have options for in-person sessions in Medicine Hat or virtual tutoring across Canada, the U.S., and beyond.
I specialize in math, chemistry, and physics — from middle school through college intro courses. I’m especially familiar with the Alberta curriculum (Math 10C through Math 30-1, Chem 20/30, Physics 20/30, etc.) and the Common Core math curriculum used across many parts of the US (algebra, geometry, algebra 2/trig, precalculus, etc.). I also help students prepare for standardized tests like the SAT, PSAT, and Grade 9 PAT.
