About Isobel
Hello, my name is Isobel and I am currently a Graduate Mechanical Engineer at Leonardo Helicopters (formerly Westlands) in Yeovil. I graduated in the summer of 2022 from Imperial College London with a first-class MEng in Aeronautical Engineering with a Year Abroad (France).
During my time at university, I volunteered at a local school as a STEM tutor for two hours per week. In this role, I assisted students in understanding concepts and used questions to solidify knowledge and understanding. I found this role to be very fulfilling and rewarding.
I also previously privately tutored GCSE Maths and GCSE Physics. This allowed me to gain experience with lots of different learners which has improved my skills and abilities to cater to each student's individual needs.
I have an enhanced DBS.

A summary of my teaching method:
Firstly, I try to gauge what the student understands and where the gaps in the knowledge are. I do this by asking questions and pushing the student to establish their knowledge of a concept. The use of hypothetical situations can be useful here.
Secondly, I explain a concept/ theory to the student. This I try to do by using plenty of examples and interaction from the student. I am not a fan of lecturing to a student! For example, I may ask questions such as: 'So, why is that?' or 'What do you think the result of that is?'.
Then, the majority of the grind consists of questions for the student to do. Perhaps answering orally or on paper. The questions would be from textbooks or past papers. In this way, it is possible to find out which parts of the explanation given the student has understood and which areas I need to explain in a different way.
Penultimately, I find it useful to summarise and consolidate what has been covered in the session as well as how it fits into the course.
Finally, I will give the student questions/ a worksheet to complete and potentially a task to do - such as 'Make a summary sheet about this topic'. I find these tasks to be useful as I find a little and often works best in understanding a concept. If sessions are a week apart it is common for the student to have, naturally, forgotten aspects of the content.
Every session will be different depending on the student, their knowledge and their style of learning. I tailor each session to that student in every possible way - no two students are the same so no two sessions should be.
Should you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.
