About Tobias

With a background in chemical engineering, hands-on research experience, and a strong academic foundation in STEM, I bring both technical expertise and a thoughtful, student-focused approach to learning support. While I do not yet have formal tutoring experience, I have consistently taken on informal teaching roles throughout my academic and professional journey—helping peers and colleagues build understanding in complex STEM topics. In these settings, I became known for my ability to reframe difficult concepts in multiple ways, allowing others to approach problems from new and more intuitive perspectives.

My approach is grounded in patience, clarity, and respect for each learner’s current level of understanding. I focus on meeting students where they are, without judgment, and guiding them step-by-step toward stronger comprehension and independence. Those I have helped often noted that they felt supported and heard, and that I made challenging material feel more approachable rather than overwhelming. This is central to how I teach: creating an environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and building confidence.

I maintain a professional, structured, and adaptable teaching style, informed by both my academic strengths and my experience navigating challenges as a first-generation college student. My goal is not only to help students improve their performance in STEM subjects, but to equip them with durable problem-solving skills and the confidence to tackle new material independently.

My approach to tutoring is highly adaptive and student-centered, grounded in the belief that there is no single way to learn STEM effectively. I draw on my background in chemical engineering, laboratory research, and experience as a first-generation college student to help students build both conceptual understanding and problem-solving confidence. Rather than relying on memorization, I focus on guiding students through how to think about a problem—breaking down complex topics into manageable steps, identifying gaps in understanding, and rebuilding core foundations where needed.

A typical lesson begins with a brief check-in to identify current challenges or recent material from class, followed by focused work on specific problems or concepts. I often use a “worked example, to guided practice, to independent attempt” structure, gradually reducing support as the student gains confidence. I also encourage students to explain their reasoning aloud, as this helps reveal misconceptions and strengthens long-term retention. Each session ends with a short recap of key ideas and, when appropriate, targeted practice problems or strategies for continued study.

What sets me apart is my emphasis on adaptability and empathy in teaching. Having experienced both academic strength and areas of struggle myself, I am attentive to different learning styles, including neurodiverse ways of thinking, and adjust my explanations accordingly. I also prioritize building independence, not just short-term performance, so students leave each session better equipped to approach new problems on their own.

My tutoring is best suited for middle school, high school, and early undergraduate students in STEM subjects—particularly math, chemistry, and foundational engineering or science coursework—who are looking to strengthen understanding, improve grades, or build long-term academic confidence.
