About Gus

I grew up in Wellington and graduated high school in 2015 before moving to Auckland, then graduated University in 2019, worked for two years as a transport engineer at Aurecon and for one year as a forecast analyst at HelloFresh. At this point I decided to take a career break and moved to Canada to ski instruct for two winters in Whistler, BC, and travel Central America and Europe in the summer. The time away has been super rewarding and a lot of my skills developed ski instructing transfer to my tutoring approach.

Outside of my technical acumen, I take immense pride in my soft skills, in particular an excellent work ethic, efficient time management, and robust written and verbal communication. For an engineer and computer geek, I'm funnily enough very charismatic and personable.

Are you or your child preparing for NCEA Maths and Science exams in New Zealand? Achieving excellence is within reach with the right guidance and support. I offer personalized tutoring designed to help students excel in NCEA levels 1, 2, and 3.

My Techniques and Teaching Methodology

1. Personalized Learning Plans: Every student is unique, with different strengths and areas that need improvement. I begin by assessing each student's current understanding and tailor a learning plan that focuses on their specific needs. This ensures efficient learning, targeting areas that will yield the best results.

2. Simplifying Complex Concepts: Maths and science can be challenging, but they don't have to be confusing. I break down complex concepts into easy-to-understand steps, using real-world examples that make abstract ideas more tangible. My goal is to build a strong foundation that students can build upon.

3. Exam-Focused Strategies: Success in NCEA isn't just about understanding the content — it's also about mastering the exam format. I teach students how to approach different types of questions, manage their time effectively, and apply their knowledge under exam conditions. This includes practicing past papers and familiarizing them with common question patterns.

4. Interactive and Engaging Lessons: I believe that learning should be interactive and engaging. My lessons are designed to be dynamic, using a variety of teaching methods such as visual aids, interactive problems, and hands-on experiments where applicable. This not only helps in retaining information but also keeps students motivated.

5. Encouraging Critical Thinking: Beyond rote learning, I emphasize critical thinking and problem-solving skills. I encourage students to ask questions, explore different approaches, and think logically. This not only prepares them for exams but also equips them with skills that are valuable beyond the classroom.

6. Regular Feedback and Progress Tracking: I provide regular feedback to both students and parents, ensuring everyone is aware of progress being made and areas that need further attention. This ongoing communication helps in keeping the student on track and adjusting the learning plan as needed.

7. Flexible Scheduling: Understanding the busy lives of students, I offer flexible scheduling options, including after-school and weekend sessions, to accommodate various timetables.
