About Ellie

I am starting an engineering degree in October 2019 upon the completion of a gap year! During my gap year I have effectively used my subject knowledge and exam technique to assist family and friends in achieving top grades, I am now branching out and am hoping to help more young individuals to reach their potential! Having struggled at school due to teachers, school environment, peers, I am aware that exam performance can be affected by situation and I feel strongly about helping children for whom their school isn’t giving them that extra bit of support. Despite not having the best experience at school, with the support of my parents and tutors I was able to achieve 9A*s and 1A. I would love to make this happen for more children who may have been made to believe this is not possible! I am also a competitive figure skater and have spent some of this year coaching younger students so have ample experience of how to connect with students of all abilities and backgrounds :)

About the lesson

Whilst many teachers are solely focused, and some may say blinded by, merely getting students through exams with acceptable grades, I believe this hinders future learning. Instead of merely focusing on memory skills and tricks for the exam, my philosophy is to create solid foundations to enable a mastery of the skills needed for each subject. With a complete mastery, exam papers can throw any example at you and you will be equipped with a thorough understanding and able to apply it to a new scenario. This far outweighs the typical memorisation technique so commonly found in schools today, where should you face a new example, adapting your learnt formula will prove challenging. Furthermore, mastering a subject leads to easier transitions to higher level learning, without having to fill in gaps missed in prior years.

During my lessons, I believe in a practical approach to learning through conversation and exploration rather than expecting a child to absorb information after information. Time in lessons will be supported by homework in the form of exam questions which I believe are a great tool for getting children to apply knowledge learnt and to begin to think in the style expected in their examinations. Additionally, regular questions on taught material will provide me with excellent feedback as to which areas to prioritize, resulting in making the most progress in the time available.
