About Justine

I remember the pressure of exams and quizzes all too well, from competing in MTAP Math Challenge as a student to passing the Civil Service Professional Exam. I know how overwhelming math can feel under pressure, which is why I focus on patient, judgment-free support. As a Civil Engineering student, I bring real, applied math experience to every lesson, helping students build not just skills, but genuine confidence and understanding, one step at a time.

As a tutor, I focus on patience and understanding, not just answers. I break down problems into simple steps, celebrate small wins, and adjust my style to how each student learns best. Whether it's basic arithmetic or algebra, my goal is to help every student feel capable, confident, and genuinely good at math.

Teaching Method and Techniques
1.Diagnosing first, teaching second — before jumping into a lesson, I ask the student to try a problem or explain their thinking, so I can pinpoint exactly where the confusion starts (a missed concept, a calculation habit, or just unfamiliarity with the format).
2.Building from the concrete to the abstract — for younger students, I use visuals, real-life examples, or hands-on counting before introducing formulas. For algebra students, I connect new topics to ones they already know (e.g., factoring builds on multiplication they already understand).
3.Repetition through varied practice — instead of repeating the same type of problem, I mix up the format (word problems, graphs, straightforward equations) so the student learns to recognize the concept in different disguises, not just memorize steps.
4.Explain-back method — I regularly ask students to explain a concept back to me in their own words. If they can teach it back, they've actually understood it.

My typical one-hour session looks like this:

1.Check-in (5 min) — Quick review of what we covered last time; address any lingering questions or homework struggles.

2.Warm-up problem (5–10 min) — A quick problem related to the day's topic to gauge current understanding.

3.Concept teaching (15–20 min) — Introduce or review the concept with explanations, examples, and visuals as needed.

4.Guided practice (15–20 min) — Work through problems together, with me gradually stepping back as the student gains confidence.

5.Independent practice (10 min) — Student solves a problem (or two) on their own while I observe, so I can catch and correct mistakes in real time.

6.Wrap-up (5 min) — Quick recap, and a note on what to focus on before the next session.

Lesson plans are flexible. If a student is struggling with a specific step, I'll slow down and spend more time there rather than rushing to finish the planned material.

Who My Lessons Are For?
1.Elementary students — building strong fundamentals in arithmetic, fractions, decimals, and word problems.
2.High school students — focused on Algebra 1 & 2, Geometry, and Trigonometry, including exam and quiz prep.
