I know studying at university in the UK can be very challenging. The education system is different from many countries and different things are expected of students. It is also very difficult to study in a foreign language.

I have previously supported undergraduate, masters and doctoral students with:

- Academic writing
- Understanding assignments and tasks
- Academic research skills: How to look and scan read journal articles.
- Assistance with understanding assignments
- Assistance with structuring assignments
- Referencing
- Preparing for presentations etc.

Lessons are designed especially to support you in your studies and are different for everyone.

Previous students who I helped were studying Business, Marketing, Law, Psychology, Social Pedagogy, Nursing, Medicine, and Social Work.

  • Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

I'm a native English speaker from the UK but traveling and meeting students from around the world has inspired me to start learning other languages.
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

British Culture is very diverse, many of my students think about Queen Elizabeth II, or Mr. Bean, but I think that British culture is a mix between Arthur Weasley in Harry Potter, and David Bowie. It's weird, it's wonderful, and it's creative.
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behaviour in the language that you particularly like?

British people (especially children) do this strange thing ….
On the first day of every month, before 14:00 you can pinch and punch (hit) a friend or classmate. At the same time you should say "Pinch punch first of the month, white rabbit no returns". But if you forget to say "no returns" your friend or classmate can reply by punching and kicking you, and say "a punch and a kick for being so quick". Don't worry, people don't actually hurt one another. This tradition dates back to the Medieval era when people would perform rituals to scare away witches, but nowadays it's just a little fun between friends to see who remembers to do it first. Do you have anything like this in your culture?
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Learning English can give you so many opportunities. Even if you don't want to work or study in an English speaking country it's useful for travel, to communicate in a common language with other non-native speakers, to keep up to date with cutting edge academic research, and to access a greater part of the internet are a few good reasons to start.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

There is a big difference between the English we read in English text books, and listen to in American movies, and the English that native speakers use. In day-to-day life native speakers use a lot of phrasal verbs, slang, idiomatic language, and have many different accents. Native speakers often ignore grammar rules even though they know them and make mistakes with was and were especially when they are speaking. As a language learner the best way to overcome this problem is to watch a lot of British reality telly (television - see what I mean about slang) . It might not be your "cup of tea" (see what I meant about idioms) but you will learn how native speakers speak, and practice listening to lots of different accents. It could be a dating show, or a baking competition, as long as there are real people and not actors it will be useful.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

When I was teaching and living in Saudi Arabia, one day I used google translate to ask for something in a pharmacy. The pharmacist looked at me and was very confused. I had asked him for a lion cub. A good English Learner's Dictionary beats a translator every time!
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

I have travelled to parts of the world where nobody speaks English at all. This has helped me as a teacher to understand how some of my students feel when they don't know how to communicate. I also have started learning French for the same reason. I always try to push myself in different ways to become a better teacher.
  • What makes you a Superprof in language?

I think I'm a superprof in English, because I try to make my lessons interesting and interactive. I will correct students but I also give lots of praise.
