About Craig
I pursued the study of English out of a passion for both reading and writing and I opted to teach as it gave me the ability to cling to something close to my heart. In university it suddenly became obvious that I had a knack for academic writing in particular and I found myself editing papers for a number of students. I know how daunting it can be to enter third level and encounter the rigours of academia for the first time. With most modern courses adopting the model of continuous assessment, and given how important grades are in view of subsequent employability, and how the promise of technological crutches like AI have recently been exposed as unviable, mastering the academic essay is more important than ever. I have distilled my own knowledge and experience of academic writing into a handful of lessons that will help smooth the transition to university and hopefully make writing seem a less frigid and more enjoyable experience, one that will continue to enrich your life long after it is mandated by the rubric of academic institutions.

Advanced creative writing (Undergraduate)
Methodology:
Lessons will necessarily be tailored to particular students requirements, but generally my lessons take a first principles approach, taking nothing for granted and covering every aspect that students need to be explicitly aware of, from grammar to rhetoric.
Both academic and creative writing require students to be technically competent, historically informed and theoretically literate, in that order. I help students develop a methodical approach to writing that builds up from the sentence level to the larger thematic level.
The typical lesson will last 40 minutes to an hour, via skype or zoom, and will involve participation from the student. These are not passive lectures.
I have a degree in English from NUI Maynooth, with honours, and a CELTA qualification for the teaching of English as a foreign language.
