About Susan
I have been teaching English, mainly as a foreign language, for over 20 years. I am qualified up to MA TESOL and also DELTA. I have taught in England, Turkey, Indonesia and Brunei. The last 12 years were spent teaching in secondary school in Brunei. I left Brunei in December 2021. There I taught mostly upper secondary, that is years 9,10 and 11, and mostly up to exams, such as O level and IGCSE.
In addition I am a qualified primary school teacher in the UK.
I have taught all levels from beginner to advanced and all ages, including pre-sessional academic courses in university.
Most of my teaching has been in class, sometimes with up to 35 students. I love teaching and always have a lot of fun in the lessons.
I particularly enjoy assessing writing and stories, giving feedback on grammar and writing skills. In the past I was a Cambridge examiner for advanced writing and proficiency. I enjoyed that very much.
I also love reading and have experience teaching English literature, particularly for upper intermediate and advanced students.
I can help you improve your conversation skills and pass English exams. I have a vast experience in teaching English at all levels and all skills, reading, writing, speaking and listening.

I like to begin a class by finding out what the students already know about a topic. I do this by using the dialogical approach, eliciting information and brainstorming. This involves the students straight away and activates prior knowledge and interest. This also gives the students confidence as they realise they do know more than they thought. This method is also used for reading and listening tasks as pre-teaching activities, again to stimulate interest.
A typical lesson will begin as above, then move on to the main task. For example a lesson on past tenses (for beginners) could have a holiday theme: What the students like to do on holiday, maybe some prompts from me to help, then elicit how to change the verbs into past tenses, then move on to production at sentence level and maybe paragraph level. The plenary maybe a grammar game to check how much students have learnt.
I have experience teaching from beginner to advanced, and exams, such as IELTS and IGCSE. I am very experienced in assessing writing, particularly for exams as I have been an examiner for IELTS in the past, and taught many exam preparation classes.
