About Rehan

The most exciting part about teaching is to see a student start off feeling hopeless ("I can't do this, it's too difficult") and then realize that they really can write an essay or spin a well-worded story ("I can't believe it was THAT easy"). Having taught in schools and tutored students one-to-one for 21 years, that moment of realization is something I have seen over and over again. Building up confidence is as much a part of a lesson as learning something and that mostly happens if you enjoy the process at your pace. Let’s start when you are ready!

Here is an overview of my teaching technique.

Literature lessons consist of:
practicing the basics of essay writing - thesis, introduction, body paragraphs split into topic sentences, examples and analysis.

Each portion of the essay writing process will be introduced one at a time at the student’s own pace until they have mastered it and feel comfortable about writing it themselves.

There are structured discussions about basic literary terms for novels, short stories and poems as well as plot structures for stories. This is followed by guided practice on how to add these literary elements to the essays in a manner relevant to the question.

Character and theme-based essays are strongly emphasized and students are coached on how to think independently based on the evidence an essay requires.

While this methodology is standard practice across all school systems, the difference in the tuitions will give the student a comfortable time range to complete their work as well as ask the tutor for help without feeling pressured.

Creative writing consists of a more hands-on and unique approach:
introduce topic-based subject and vocabulary; teach how to express the given vocabulary using figurative language like metaphors/similes/personification; introduce plot, story, characterization and theme to add depth.

A typical lesson plan for a creative writing class would be something like this:
STEP 1: Pick an action-oriented event. Example: “Going to the airport for a flight” or “Climbing to the top of a hill”.
STEP 2: Introduce vocabulary associated with the location/event. Example: “Terminal = a building in an airport that is the point of arrival or departure.”
STEP 3: Write a paragraph, just ONE paragraph using the given vocabulary in the easiest and simplest terms: “We arrived at the airport and saw the terminal.”
STEP 4: Convert the vocabulary into an expressive image using a simile, a metaphor or through personification. Example: “We arrived at the airport and saw the terminal standing before us like a gateway to freedom.”
STEP 5: Complete the entire paragraph with help from the tutor in creating expressive imagery.
STEP 6: Try the second paragraph on your own and ask the tutor when you get stuck.
STEP 7: Invent an interesting or thrilling situation to convert the simple situational plot (Going to the airport for a flight) into an actual story (Having your passport stolen and pursuing the thief).
