My teaching methods vary in accordance with students' needs. I am happy to supervise essay structure and planning, develop critical reading skills from school to university level, teach the basic technical vocabulary of literary criticism, and improve confidence in articulating responses to literature.
I like to pay close attention to texts and build ideas from specific details into the architecture of an essay. Working from detailed analysis to broader argumentation offers a flexible and transferable means of critical engagement with primary and secondary literary materials, and students' own work.
I hold a PhD (full scholarship), masters (distinction), and first-class honours degree in English literature from Edinburgh University. I have taught at undergraduates at Edinburgh and given private tuition at various levels. My students have ranged in age from 15-60.
