In everything, it's crucial to start at the beginning. Most people never learn many basic English grammatical rules, but those are pivotal to being able to form your language into what you want to say. Lessons would include primarily back-and-forth discussion rather than lecturing. Each lesson would end with a homework assignment and the next would open with going over any confusions on it.
I'm finishing up my third year at university studying English, which means that I've spent far too many hours poring over books and reading into every single line of text. I have completed an unpublished manuscript and have upwards of fifty pages handed in since starting college.
