About Kiersten

My name is Kiersten Busch, and I am a recent graduate of Franklin & Marshall College, where I received my B.A. in English Literature. I also minored in Spanish, and studied Spanish literature via my minor! My research during my time at F&M focused primarily on Shakespearean literature and theory, and I am extremely passionate about fostering a new generation of students who enjoy learning about and reading Shakespeare. However, I am passionate about ALL things English/English Lit, and love to share my enthusiasm with all willing participants. I'm flexible with my time, understanding of those around me, and dedicated to helping all of my students become the best versions of themselves that they can be!

Outside of the classroom, I love spending time reading both Western literature and Japanese manga. I also enjoy spending time exploring New Haven and the surrounding area with my partner, and playing with my six month old cat!

About the lesson

My approach to teaching is to make the student as comfortable as possible with the material in the manner that is best suited to their personal learning style. I am never afraid to go over something twice (or three, four, five, etc. times)! My student's comfort with the material is the top priority. I love to use learning tools (such as flash cards, knowledge games, interactive PowerPoints, etc) as a visual aid to help students grasp whatever concept they need additional help with.

Typical lessons would consist of starting with student's questions and concerns, to outline what the focus/core of the session would be. Then, we will go over the desired concept again for clarity, then practice the skill (via writing prompts, knowledge check questions, other visual learning aids, and any other review methods relevant to the lesson at hand). We will end with a summary of what we've learned, and what our goals will be going forward.

What sets me apart as a tutor? My empathetic nature and flexibility. I love to get to know those who I work with, to truly understand how they operate as learners.

What exactly can I help with? I am comfortable tutoring middle school English, high school English, and college English (the class level ranging from regular grade-level to AP). My research specialized in Shakespearean literature and theory in college, so I am particularly enthusiastic about helping people understand Shakespeare and his complicated language, which I know is part of most public school English curriculums. I am also happy to assist with middle school and high school Creative Writing (from book reports, to poems, short stories, and beyond).

Truly, I am looking to mentor and instruct any young student who is in need of some extra help!
