About Anike
I am an English Studies student at the University of Pretoria. I'm in my final year and I'm planning on doing my Honours and Masters in Creating Writing. I've been an au pair in Pretoria for the past 3 years and I also went abroad right after high school to au pair in the States. I absolutely adore working with children and I've worked with children of all ages.

I am very patient when it comes to teaching and I find it is best to give a lot of positive affirmation and create a safe space where it is OK to make mistakes. I have seen that children tend to beat themselves up a lot when they make a mistake or struggle to understand something. Once a child gets the idea in their head that they are stupid they tend to give up easily or not even try to begin with. They are also less likely to admit that they do not understand something for fear of looking stupid. I like to show them that I make mistakes as well and that they teach me just as much as I teach them. This gives them more confidence which allows them to have a more positive outlook on learning.
My teaching method is a combination of a teacher-centered and student-centered approach. It really all depends on the child. Some children can grasp a concept really quickly and are good with following instructions, because they are able to listen and understand. Whereas other children take a bit longer to grasp a concept and need a more interactive approach through visual and practical learning.
