About Noemí

Hi! My name is Noemi, and I have been an English tutor for 5 years now. I believe that, if English (or in general any second language) tends to choke students, it is mostly because the traditional teaching methods often forget about the speaking and listening skills. I believe that mastering language is about being able to maintain a conversation fluently, in real - life contexto... And that these conversations should go beyond the topics that usually appear in English textbooks. Of course, grammar is fundamental (it is, in fact, the necessary basis to learn any language; if the student does not have it, a solid knowledge of the language will be almost impossible). But mastering the language involves its active, constant use. This is why I think that the speaking and listening skills have been left behind in the traditional methods (schools, and even language academies tend to commit this mistake). It seems like those who cannot afford traveling abroad will not have a real the opportunity to put these skills into practice. However, I believe that nowadays there are a thousand ways of improving them: we have infinite audiovisual material at our disposal that, if used correctly, can serve to improve accent and fluency, and even to acquire some slang and popular expressions, which are aspects of the language reserved to natives and to people who have travelled abroad.

About the lesson

*** "ONE TO ONE" (25 euros / hour). I adequate my methods to the student's objectives, and to their starting level. For example, I can put an emphasis on technical vocabulary or, if the student has a particular interest in some subject area (history, philosophy, etc.), I will choose the reading and listening materials based on these interests. But, in general terms, my classes consist of reading newspaper articles (The New York Times, The Washington Post, etc.) or literary fragments, based on which a conversation is started (1 to 1). This way, the student will get to practice his conversational ability and, in addition, will think and express himself/herself on current, relevant issues (immigration, globalization, social networks, etc.). As well, and in order to make the student used to listening different accents and pronunciations, we will watch short videos (fundamentally, monologues by both American and British comedians, which generally address interesting topics, and are also full of references to popular culture, colloquial expressions, etc). My main intention is to provide the student with some fundamental tools, that will help him/her to move in his/her personal and professional life: what is the use of such a deep knowledge on grammar, if the student, when arriving to meeting, a dinner or company party, etc., does not feel enough confident to speak, just as he or she would in their native language?
