About Kieran
Hi, I’m Kieran, a recent first-class history graduate from the University of Oxford! I’m here for tutoring, essay help and proof reading.
During my degree I developed a particular interest in modern history, leading me to study general papers which covered both twentieth-century Britain and Europe. Yet, while modern history became my primary focus and passion, I also took Medieval and Early Modern papers, ensuring that I am well-equipped to tutor these areas.
Having only finished my A-Levels five years ago, I can clearly remember the feeling of being on a never-ending exam treadmill. Academic success requires perseverance and an attention to detail (including the ability to understand and navigate mark schemes...) However, I found that acquiring an enthusiasm for the subject made this process much easier and more enjoyable. As such, inspired by the intensive and meticulous character of the Oxford tutorial system, my sessions will seek to encourage student-led discussion and engagement alongside a focus on improving the tutee’s writing style and exam technique. My teaching experience means that I feel confident that I can share my skills and enthusiasm for the humanities with students, helping them to push themselves and excel.

The British examination system, on the surface, appears prescriptive and limiting, requiring the student to jump through hoops in order to achieve good marks. While this criticism is certainly a valid one, making an understanding of the mark scheme indispensable, my sessions will recognise and encourage individuality, showing that there are lots of different paths a student can take to learn the information they need to succeed. Some students prefer mind-mapping, others favour timelines; different techniques work for different people!
My sessions will, initially, be directed by the specific concerns of the student. By listening to the student and working with their strengths I will look to build up their confidence and enthusiasm for the subject. However, I will accompany discussion-led tutorials with a close focus on the specifics of exam technique and writing style; unsurprisingly, I have found that students acquire more confidence when they feel that they understand what examiners expect of them.
