About Alex

Education has always been an important factor in my life, in large part because my grandfather was an elementary school maths teacher for 30 years. He instilled in me a drive to be curious and to learn intently. During my undergraduate studies I discovered a love of philosophy and pursued a bachelor's degree. My studies would help me learn what it meant to be a good student, as well as a good teacher. It was at this point that I began to seriously consider being an educator as a career. Over the next several years I would work in local schools as special education support. From this I learned how to work closely with students who have additional learning needs, both cognitive and behavioural. I have recently begun my career as an educator having completed the education master’s program at Western Governors University. Through my student teaching I was given a lot of opportunities to hone my skills as an educator. I was given total control over multiple periods of first-year biology, where I designed two full units over the course of two months, including creating lesson plans and assessments in line with the required learning objectives for that level. I practised using differentiated instruction and scaffolding to support students facing challenges. I also practised communicating effectively and professionally with student families to rectify issues in the classroom. I have since been working as a substitute for the school district, giving me ample opportunity to continually further my skills.

About the lesson

My lessons are designed for secondary students ages 13-16 who have completed primary science courses. I emphasise procedural learning, often guided by student enquiry. My lessons are structured with clear methods and goals for the student to use. I also use differentiated instruction, implementing various teaching tools to engage students of all learning styles. Lessons will typically last about an hour and often include a built-in formative assessment to gauge student progress. I maintain a low stakes environment where students can feel confident and grow without fear of failure. I am qualified to be a science tutor through my secondary science teaching certification, as well as my years of experience in secondary schools as instructional support.
