About Ed

I am a founder (operations manager) of a start-up company that navigated Ontario’s entrepreneurial support ecosystem and made a successful exit. Our venture worked with notable organizations like the Centre for Urban Energy at TMU, Ontario Centres of Excellence, and Keiretsu Forum’s Toronto VC chapter.

I am also a research and teaching professional with background in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC), assistive technology, and entrepreneurial support sectors.

About the lesson

Effective start-up support requires attention to context and the lived experience of founders as people. Lesson plans are anything but typical and we essentially build them together. You can expect to learn about concepts like customer discovery, intellectual property strategy, social infrastructure, and ways to act on them. Much of the work will be iterative: fine-tuning an application to an accelerator, or a pitch deck for prospective customers or investors; ensuring strategy aligns with your venture’s mission; or finding pathways to more focused support, like technical or legal advice.

Unlike most start-up expertise out there, mine is not only based on personal (possibly biased) experience. I do industry and academic research that has engaged 20+ start-up teams in diverse subject matter and technology spaces. I also engage the people that support start-ups, like directors of incubator or accelerator programs, faculty in academic entrepreneurship programs, and venture capital or angel investors. I maintain a diverse network in the entrepreneurial start-up and support ecosystem. More importantly, this network provides a deep pool of lessons learned, best practices, and other information. I will share content curated to your start-up, preparing you as much as possible for a start-up journey that will be inevitably unique.

If you are ideating or truly 'starting up', I will dispel the troublesome myth of the 'full-time founder' and help you establish solid footing. Whether you are a high-school student, working full or part-time, or pursuing a business, engineering, or sociology degree – if you have a promising idea for a product or service, you deserve the opportunity to realize it and see uptake by actual customers. Maybe you are active in your local community and see opportunities for social or charitable enterprise – I can help you establish a coherent mission and achieve it sustainably. If your start-up has traction with customers or community, I can be an ‘accountabili-buddy’. I will intensify that hard-earned momentum and help you navigate key stages for growth, through effective planning and tactics.
