About Eric
I have been a professor of statistics and epidemiology at several universities. I have also tutored in these subjects for many years. I thoroughly enjoy tutoring and have been consistently highly reviewed. Many students have come to me through word of mouth. I think that empathy, understanding, patience, and being supportive are crucial as so many students are “psyched out” by statistics and epidemiology and not in the right frame of mind to do their best and to have less anxiety from the course. Besides teaching and tutoring, I regularly give seminars on topics in statistics and epidemiology that emphasize critical thinking over complex mathematics.

If somehow I can just pass this course, I can get my degree. I have heard words like this many times, spoken with an anxious tone. It's not as hard as you think!! I have found, as a long-time professor and tutor, that statistics and epidemiology are often taught very poorly. The memorizing of formulas and when to use particular tests are emphasized. But when a less mathematical approach is used, where a few key concepts that are crucial to understanding the reasoning behind statistics are emphasized; students do much better. They are less frustrated and enjoy the course more. True understanding lessens anxiety. For example, I won't just teach what a null hypothesis is but the logic behind it and how it relates to significance testing, p-value, and the other crucial concepts of statistical hypothesis testing. I do this by using the analogy of a criminal legal analogy that I have used for years and that I have published in the medical literature. It gives students a nonmathematical analogy that is a great help in understanding key statistical concepts.

I've known Eric Mintz for several years as a colleague at the Canadian Institute for Health Information. During that time, I attended several of his presentations. His presentations are very clear and the statistical concepts and data are very easy to understand due to his solid understanding of the subject and ability to simplify it to a less knowledgeable audience. While I no longer work with Eric, I often consult him on statistical questions and issues that I encounter for various projects and find him to be extremely helpful in clarifying what seem to be complex concepts. Eric has excellent statistical communication ability, can relate the statistical findings to broader literature, and is invested in others' learning and growth. I highly recommend him.
