In order to accomplish learners’ goals, I tend to focus on three phases: speaking, reading, then writing. Listening comprehension is emphasizes at every level. During the first phase, speaking, classes are generally conversational and supplemented through fun online and in-person games. At the second phase, reading, learners will be given various, age-appropriate reading materials, such as tall tales, short story series, and eventually simple novels. During the third phase, writing, learners are usually given a short article to discuss and write responses. Article topics vary and stress different reading comprehension skills (i.e. compare and contrast, character analysis, literary elements, etc.).
