About Scott

I first discovered my love of teaching as an undergraduate student I was given the opportunity to work as a Teaching Assistant in Sociology. One of my responsibilities was to teach weekly seminars to first-year students. I enjoyed answering their questions and helping them to understand the ideas necessary for success in their essays and exams. After more than 8 semesters as a Teaching Assistant, I decided to start teaching ESL at colleges and universities in China. I found that media was often a good way to teach, if it was followed up with discussion and/or homework, and I have continued to use media in my online teaching. As the topics that I cover in my classes involve opinion and perspective (with no right answer), I am very interested in the different ideas and perspectives that each student brings to the class, and encourage them to develop their thinking.

About the lesson

My classes provide an opportunity to think and talk about many ideas about the human condition, and to enrich your English by using it to explain your observation and ideas through exposure to media. There are two sets of students that I have materials for: 1. advanced adults who are already at a band 6 level on IELTS, who can already express and discuss ideas, but want to continue to develop their ability. This is Us (American Drama Series that examines the complexities of life and relationships) The Good Place (an American Situation Comedy that explores ethics) 2. 9-13 year old students who are already at a band 4 level on IELTS, who are beginning to understand English well enough to express and discuss ideas and opinions The Princess Bride (a classic romance/adventure/comedy) Turning Red (a Chinese-Canadian Pixar animated adventure comedy about a girl who becomes a giant Red Panda when she has strong feelings.) My classes start by going over unique vocabulary, collocations, and idioms that come up in the episode being studied, this material is assigned as homework before the class. A 44-minute episode is divided into 4 or 5 segments, and each student is assigned one of two questions in each section. Before watching the segment the student reads their question out loud (they should read and understand all of the vocabulary and grammar for all of the questions before the class). The 6-11 minute segment is then watched and the student answers their questions. Some of the questions that involve deep reflection and opinions are discussed, with each student contributing their ideas and observations after the primary student has answered their assigned question. Preferred class size 3-4 people

My fee for one student is $20 (CAN) or 120 (CNY) 2 students 70 (CNY) each 3 students 50 (CNY) each 4 students 40 (CNY) each Within a 60-minute class, at least 50 minutes will be spent on English work and discussion. The media watching will never be over 10 minutes in a 60-minute class.
