About Akshita
Hey,
I am an electrical and electronics engineer and I am currently pursuing my masters in electrical and computer engineering from a Canadian University.
I have about 2 years of work experience as software development senior associate at NTT Data private limited.
I have about a year’s experience in teaching children from my neighbourhood and have also volunteered to conduct computer classes for under privileged children.
I love to celebrate the magic of spreading and sharing knowledge during my spare time and since math is my favourite subject, I enjoy teaching this subject and every time I teach I too get to learn lot of facts so it is more like a “give and receive” journey to me.

As a student, I reckon that there is a glitch in the Indian education system as we always focus more on theoretical approach rather than practical or application basis. I want to change this conventional learning experience into an environment were learning is not only fun but also by end of day the student would be learning the applications and change their entire perspective about the subject.
Everything around us is nothing but binary digits “1” and “0” and there is no world without maths. For example, math gives us hope that every problem has a solution.
Reading and experimenting practically offers complete learning. Thus, the urge to integrate theory with a practical outlook is the key to understand and enjoy learning maths and this motivates me to implement the aforementioned methodologies in teachIng mathematics. This is my approach to giving back to the society in return to what I gained in the form of knowledge.
Good teachers teach but great teachers inspire and I would like to teach my students by inspiring them. So together let’s kick start a new way to unravel the intricacies of this amazing subject and prove that math is nothing but fun.

The ultimate goals of mathematics instruction are students understanding the material presented, applying the skills, and recalling the concepts in the future. Here are few of my approaches to teach mathematics:
1). Create an effective class opener
The first five minutes of the class period set the tone for the entire lesson. Ideally, I would start by sharing the agenda for the class period so that students will know the expectations for what will be occurring. Next, I would post and articulate the learning objective or essential question to the class so that students know the purpose and, at the end of the lesson, can self-assess whether the objective has been met for them. Finally, the opener might include one or more warm-up problems as a way to review and assess students' prior knowledge in preparation for exposure to the new material.
2) Introduce topics using multiple representations
The more types of representations that I would present to students addressing their different learning styles, the more likely they will truly understand the concept being presented. Different representations could include using manipulatives, showing a picture, drawing out the problem, and offering a symbolic representation. For example, when presenting linear relationships with one unknown, illustrate to students the same problem as an equation, on a number line, in words, and with pictures.
3) Solve problems many ways
In the best classroom environment, I would show different ways to solve the same problem and encourage the students to come up with their own creative ways to solve them. The more strategies and approaches that students are exposed to, the deeper their conceptual understanding of the topic becomes. After the student finish solving the class problem using a single method, I would encourage them to look for alternate ways to come up with the same correct solution. I strongly believe that having students develop their own methods and then share the correct steps with the class is a very powerful learning experience.
4) Show the application
In a perfect world, we would always be able to demonstrate how every concept can be applied to the real world -- and when that's possible, it helps improve the students' understanding. When a concept cannot be applied in that manner, we can still share how it might be applied within mathematics or another subject area. I would take a minute out of each lesson to show the students where or how the math can be seen or used in life outside of the classroom.
5) Have students communicate their reasoning
Students need to explain their reasoning when solving problems. In order for me to determine if every student truly understands the objective for the class period, it's necessary for each student to communicate both orally and in writing. By giving the class ten minutes to discuss their reasoning with each other while exploring multiple ways of solving the problems, I will promote excellent engagement and learning.
6) Finish class with a summary
The final seven minutes might be the most critical in making sure that students have understood the day's learning objective. I would utilise this time to accomplish three very important things:
i) A quick formative assessment to determine how much was learned, such as students self-rating their comfort with the concept on a 1-5 scale
ii) Reviewing the objective for the class period and brief discussion as to where the lesson will go next time
iii) Previewing the homework together to avoid any confusion
