MY PERSONAL STATEMENT
Learning for problem solving
Learning should not be an end in itself but rather a means to an end. Good education is that which is aimed at problem solving and I believe learners are supposed to be exposed to that orientation from their tender ages. Problem-solving learning involves imbibing certain skills such as critical thinking and
collaboration for effective teamwork. These are necessary survival skills for the real world outside school.
Critical thinking and collaborative activities are usually essential parts of my lesson plans and delivery. Moreover, I have always tried to link every topic taught to real-life situations. During evaluation (both assessment for and of learning), it is my common practice to ask probing questions that make learners think outside the box. In so doing, instead of just asking What is …?, it is rather extended to Why is it …? or ‘Why not …?’. This I consider necessary for learners to be able to make independent
and sound judgement when they are confronted with problem-solving scenarios.
Towards effective collaboration in class, I usually put learners in groups while paying particular attention to the ability levels of group members. Each group usually contains at least one high
achiever, who leads discussions and carries the lower-ability learners along. With our slogan Together, Everyone Achieves More (TEAM), learners are usually very happy working together and making the lesson objectives fully achieved most of the time.
Nevertheless, collaboration has never hindered the need for effective differentiation, given the different learning preferences of learners. My lessons are usually differentiated through content, strategy and evaluation. While the main body of the lesson caters for all categories of learners, the
highest achievers are usually probed further by way of additional tasks to extend their learning. For strategy, I have always adopted several inclusive approaches. For example, while I use a lot of
pictorial and video resources in order to cater for the audio-visually inclined learners, hands-on activities are used for those with preference for kinesthetic. Overall, I always give every learner the opportunity to learn at their individual pace.
