My Excel teaching for science and research students specifically addresses the complete research data workflow from experimental recording through statistical analysis through publication-quality visualization, because this is the actual workflow that research students need to execute and that generic Excel training does not prepare them for. I teach data recording best practice from the very beginning — structured spreadsheet design that separates raw data from analysis, consistent format conventions, and the documentation habits that make research data usable by others — because these practices are fundamental to research data management and are almost never taught in laboratory training. Statistical analysis for research covers both the specific Excel functions for each test type and the conceptual understanding of what each test is assessing, because research students who choose the wrong statistical test or misinterpret the output produce unreliable conclusions regardless of their Excel skill. Publication-quality chart production in Excel covers the specific differences between charts that are appropriate for internal analysis and charts that meet the visual standards of academic journals and professional research reports, because there is a large and bridgeable gap between these standards. I teach data validation and quality control as systematic research practices — checking for data entry errors, outlier detection, and the identification of values that are physically impossible or inconsistently recorded — because the quality of scientific conclusions depends entirely on the quality of the underlying data. Collaboration and sharing practices for research data — protecting raw data sheets, providing analysis documentation, preparing Excel files for sharing with supervisors or co-authors — are addressed as professional research skills. My teaching goal is a research student who manages and analyzes their experimental data rigorously and communicates the results clearly.
