About Laura

I’m Laura, an experienced teacher and former solicitor with a keen passion for law. I am really committed to helping young people to enter this fascinating career.

I had a long career as a criminal defence and employment law solicitor. As part of my criminal law practice I specialised in representing children and teenagers through the youth courts. It was through this that I realised one key strength was in establishing constructive relationships with young people. As adults we sometimes forget the many pressures young people have upon them both inside and outside education and the barriers these can present to them reaching their goals. The first thing I do with a new student is take time to get to know them and establish a rapport. I want our tutoring sessions to be a truly safe space for them, free of judgement and geared only towards helping them achieve their full potential.

I am passionate about helping young people which is my motivation for teaching.

About the lesson

As a former solicitor experienced in criminal, tort and contract law, I know the value and rewarding nature of a career in this fascinating field. After deciding to pivot to teaching for family reasons, I have steadily built up a practice in teaching A Level law to an exceptional standard, with experience of both the AQA and OCR exam boards (although the content is very similar across all boards). I am an experienced examiner who has achieved excellent feedback from the OCR board.

I know how hard it can be to be faced with a law problem that, perhaps, you don’t know where to begin when answering. I specialise in stripping the question back to basics, identifying the exact area of law we are looking at, and building up the subject knowledge step by step before applying it to the scenario. To help with knowledge I use a range of methods to assist memory from mnemonics and acronyms to visual cues. Knowledge of case law is a crucial part of the subject but I understand the sheer volume of cases to memorise can be frustrating. A key strength of my teaching is helping students unlock ways of remembering them so that they stick.

I am known for my empathetic nature and have always had excellent constructive relationships with students. Whilst I am straightforward about what students need to do to help them reach their goal I do so in a kind, encouraging way to ensure they are not stressed by the topic we are looking at.
