About Renée

I graduated from Cambridge in 2022, where I received a BAhons in Human, Social and Political Sciences. Here, I wrote two dissertations and many short and long form essays, with a consistent average grading of a 1st. I am currently studying for my Master's degree at the Royal College of Art in Writing and do tutoring on the side of this. I also successfully applied to other top universities, such as UAL, where I was offered a scholarship to study Journalism. In terms of my A levels, I achieved full UMS in all of my A level Psychology exams and an A*, A in Sociology and English Literature respectively. I delivered award-winning research at Cardiff University, based on the transition from secondary school to college (2019). I also received a fully funded place on Bath University's Social Sciences Course (2018), which enabled me to have access to their excellent research facilities, workshops and lectures from experts in the field. I also have extensive creative writing experience, successfully submitting my original writing, to over 10 magazines. I have also been featured as an upcoming writer by Quake Digital, and have been commended by Varsity Magazine. I recently won the Creative Future Award for my writing, as part of the London Literature Festival. Previously, I have tutored pupils of all levels from KS2 to University level, and hold an enhanced DBS check. Most importantly, I love tutoring and it is more than just a job to me! I am really passionate about making education accessible for all, and put a lot of effort into my lessons to ensure this.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

Choosing to study Human, Social and Political Sciences at University was a little bit of a no brainer. As soon as I found the course online I knew it was just right for me ! I particularly loved the variety of subjects you can explore - Psychology, Sociology, Politics, Anthropology etc, and the ability to study subjects I hadn't explored at A level. I also really loved how my course was all essay based, as I really enjoyed English A level, and am particularly interested in creative and academic writing.

During my last year of university, I felt I had built up enough experience to start helping others hone their interests, and signed up to Superprof. Since then I have tutored loads of students, helping them achieve their dream grades.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach Psychology, Sociology, English (Lit and Lang) and Creative Writing. I am particularly fond of tutoring Sociology A level, as I feel like some really interesting topics and debates come up, and are very relevant to the contemporary world.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

My Sociology A level teacher. He was way more than a teacher, he cared about wellbeing, was passionate about his subject and took a holistic approach to teaching. He really demonstrated how Sociology was so pertinent to everyday life, and fostered my interest in the subject.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

I think tutors should be focused not only on academic results and delivering content, but also being inclusive and making their lessons accessible to everyone. As well as being an expert in my field, I offer a free 30 minute consultation to discuss each new student's specific needs. This focuses on identifying my students' learning style, any additional needs, and questions or concerns they may have.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

My Sociology teacher, when he left after our first year of A levels. He gave the whole class a talk on Sociology and how it had helped him in his own life, and how we could do the same. I remember feeling so inspired and even teared up!
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

I remember when I started at university, I was so uncertain of the whole process - how to go about essay writing, what was needed to access the highest grades, how to reference etc. No one I knew who had gone through the same process, and therefore I want to be that person for others. I think it is so tricky figuring things like that for the first time, and want to help others to feel less lost.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I think my main passion is access to education for everyone. So often, education and tutoring is reserved for those who can pay extremely high rates and have the resources to help themselves, and I aim to counter this by offering solidarity prices.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

The time and effort put into my lessons. I really try to capture my own enthusiasm and relay this to others by creating engaging and interesting lessons.
