About Laura

I am a business student who, besides in my general studies, enjoys focusing on ways to engage in communities around me and help others. I have been participating in "conversation partners" programs, and English teaching for the past year. For several months at the beginning of 2017 in Canada, I partnered with two Japanese exchange students in one-on-one settings to discuss various topics, and undertake speaking and reading in English; we also participated on outings together to explore some of my culture so they could gain more insight and understanding from my perspective. In addition, I held Skype teaching lessons in English with students from Korea to help them learn the language proficiently by doing similar things; We had discussion and focused on speaking and reading. In turn of my experiences, I learned a lot from the students I engaged with and I am excited to work with you!

About the lesson

My form of lessons will likely cater to those who can read English, but who have trouble speaking and writing efficiently. As I am a native English speaker with effective communication skills, I will assist you will transferring your knowledge of English to the form of discussion and written work. We will likely see a general structure including the following major areas: 1) reading out loud: this allows one to convert their previous knowledge of English into speakable form, bridging the separation between knowledge of meaning of words and communication, 2) learning new vocabulary: this will expand the general vocabulary of the student, allowing them to more easily describe ideas and concepts in more than one way by learning more words and their meanings and contexts, and 3) answering questions and having discussion: this is what ties together the first 2 parts; this will allow the student to understand and develop familiarity with the way English language users combine words with meaning in order to communicate it effectively, efficiently, and fluently to others.
Of course, I believe that it is best to get to know the student's needs before determining the most optimal lesson structure, so I will look forward to getting to know students more, what their needs are, and what they wish to accomplish with learning English as a new language!
