I adapt everything I do to suit the individual needs and interests of the child and work closely with their families to understand them and build trusting relationships. I have been teaching many of my current students for four years or more. I have a house full of science equipment and can offer exciting demonstrations, engaging props, microscope explorations and a range of unusual animals! I can build in practical experiences and experiments for students to join in with at home, if that’s what works for them. I can be flexible and student-led, fitting science into their areas of interest. Through the years I have developed a range of teaching techniques that allow students to engage and learn however works best for them. Online, I have taught teddies and blank screens, I have taught children who love to share their ideas and thoughts and others who have only communicated by chat. I’m happy for children to join in with cameras on or off, with hand gestures, chat messages or emojis, or just watching and observing. In person I’ve taught children under blankets, on the floor, under tables, on tables, both indoors and out. Of course I’m happy to adapt as we go along to suit their changing confidence, needs and interests. I never pressure a child or put them ‘on the spot’, I always work by offering opportunities and engagement, encouraging them to want to know more, rather than telling them what they should do. Kindness, patience and understanding are at the heart of all I do, with a good dose of humour to lighten things when appropriate!
I have extensive experience teaching Biology GCSE / IGCSE (AQA, Edexcel, Cambridge specifications) and can offer structured and exam-focused learning in key stage four biology and curriculum-focused science teaching at key stages one, two and three, as well as curriculum-linked guidance in Physics and Chemistry at key stage four. For many of my students I follow their lead and fit the science in at any and all of these stages to suit them as opportunities arise. My business has recently been approved as an AQA Unit Award Scheme Centre, and soon I will also be able to offer opportunities for my students to gain certified, accredited awards to recognise their skills and learning.
I offer one hour sessions on Zoom, though if a shorter session would suit your child better this could also be arranged (pro rata).
I offer 1 hour free before you begin. This could consist of a chat on the phone (if wanted) first, so that I can work with you to understand your objectives and what works best for your child, followed by a free online session (Zoom) with your child so that your child can see if they would like more. You are welcome to sit in with your child in any or all of our sessions.
I am new to Superprof, so am waiting to build my profile here, but in the meantime you can search for my business, Sparking STEM, on the web and on Trustpilot, to see what people say about me and my teaching.
