I have been mentoring university applicants (in particular those applying to Oxford or Cambridge and/or for medicine) for the past two years, and have more recently delivered mock interviews to numerous students in a range of science subjects.

My main approach to mentoring students in their university applications is maintaining authenticity whilst presenting the characteristics university tutors will be looking for. Reflection on relevant (and sometimes non-relevant) experiences is key, alongside presenting a range of interests and avoiding the all-too-common traps of overusing ‘passion’ or declaring your life-long love for your subject (however true the latter may be).
My style of interview preparation, however, places more of an emphasis on confidence-building and well-preparedness. While it’s not necessary to be an expert on your subject by the time the interview rolls around (bearing in mind that’s not what most tutors are looking for anyway), it certainly helps to know a lot about a small handful of subjects to use as fallbacks.
