About Eden

Hello! I am an English tutor with over 4 years of experience working with more than 200 students across GCSE, A-Level, IB, and university level. English is a subject I find endlessly rich — every new text brings new analytical challenges, and the craft of writing is something that can always be developed further, regardless of the starting level. I bring that genuine love of language and literature into every session I deliver. My teaching covers the full English curriculum: literary analysis in prose, poetry, and drama; language and rhetoric; argument and essay writing; creative writing; and comprehensive examination preparation for all major exam boards. I am particularly experienced in helping students develop a genuine critical voice — the ability to commit to a specific, well-evidenced interpretation of a text rather than producing safely vague, hedge-everything responses that fail to distinguish themselves in a competitive marking environment. I combine this analytical work with careful attention to written expression at every level — sentence, paragraph, and whole-text structure — because the quality of the writing is part of what is being assessed in English, not just the quality of the ideas. Students who work with me develop both dimensions together.

About the lesson

I teach English by working at the intersection of reading and writing, because the two skills are far more deeply connected than most instruction acknowledges. Students who read analytically develop a much richer sense of the options available to them as writers. Students who write regularly with attention to craft develop a much more acute sense of how other writers are making choices and to what effect. I develop both skills simultaneously in every session, using each to reinforce the other.My reading instruction focuses on developing genuine close reading ability: the patience to slow down in front of a text, the curiosity to ask why particular choices were made rather than simply what they mean, and the analytical discipline to build from specific textual observation to broader interpretive claim. My writing instruction focuses on argumentation and craft: how to construct a claim that is specific enough to be interesting and arguable enough to require evidence, how to deploy that evidence efficiently, and how to write sentences that are precise, varied, and controlled.For students working toward specific examinations, I bring detailed knowledge of the relevant mark schemes, question types, and assessment objectives, and I design my teaching and practice around these requirements. I am experienced with GCSE, A-Level, IB, and university-level English, and I always tailor my approach to the specific demands of each student's assessment.
