About David
David is Assistant Organist at Christchurch Priory, Dorset, and holds the highest UK qualifications as an Organist - Fellow of the Royal College Organists - and as a prizewinning holder of the RCO’s Choral Training Diploma - FRCO(DipCHM), in addition to holding a BMus(Hons) degree London University after undergraduate study at The Royal Academy of Music. David has enjoyed a rewarding career in music education. As Head of Music Department at Poole Grammar School for over twenty years, he has taught generations of students, many of whom have gone onto further education and careers in Music. David has maintained his active interest in composition throughout his school-teaching career, but is now working on further projects and teaching composition, composition techniques, harmony and counterpoint. As a composer, he was delighted to have his arrangement of “I saw three ships” broadcast on BBC Radio 4 on Christmas Day 2014, by Portsmouth Cathedral Choir, and recorded by them on CD, also being published on the cover CD of BBC Music Magazine. A recent orchestral overture “One Giant Leap…” was written and first performed in 2019 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing by Apollo 11 in July 1969. In a wonderful highlight in June 2024, David conducted his own orchestration of “I saw three ships” in Studio 1, Abbey Road. David is an enthusiastic, knowledgeable and engaging tutor who enjoys working with students of all ages.

Motivation is the key to unlock all good progress in learning and David is able to adapt his teaching style and materials to suit his students in order to support their learning. David helps his organ students to build their skills and confidence in learning the coordination required to play the organ through a range of exercises, practice techniques and pieces of repertoire, to engage the motivation of his students. Teaching the organ is most easily approached through face-to-face lessons, on his three-manual Viscount organ at his home (and it is sometimes possible to have lessons with David on one of the organs at Christchurch Priory) but he is also able to teach online.
