About Elise

Bonjour, I'm Elise. I'm French - born and raised - and I've been in Melbourne for a few years now. I've tutored French privately for around four years all up - total beginners, busy professionals brushing up before a trip, advanced learners preparing for DELF or DALF, people getting ready to move to France or another French-speaking country.

My background is in French literature - a Master's, after two years of Hypokhâgne and Khâgne (one of France's most demanding academic tracks).

But honestly, the more useful thing for tutoring is probably that I'm also a journalist. I've written for publications in France, Belgium, and the French-Australian community over here - so the French I teach is alive: current, real, the way people actually speak and read.

I love this work because watching someone shift from "I can't" to actually thinking in French - even a little - never stops feeling good.

About the lesson

Lessons are tailored to whatever you actually need. Some students just want to talk - work on fluency, confidence, the small things that make a conversation feel less hesitant.

Some are preparing for exams (DELF, DALF) and want a structured plan. Others are moving to France or another French-speaking country and need to be functional fast. A few want to sharpen their professional or business French. We'd figure out together what makes sense for you.

My approach sits somewhere between structured and conversational. I take preparation seriously, but I also love making lessons fun - you learn faster when you're enjoying yourself.

I tailor lessons to whatever you're into - film, food, books, current affairs - and French culture tends to come up a lot, naturally. With beginners, I focus on building a solid foundation. With more advanced students, I push on nuance and precision. We work in French as much as your level allows, and I switch to English whenever it'd actually help.

Lessons can be online from anywhere, or in person somewhere in central Melbourne - whichever works better for you. Conversation is $65 an hour; structured lessons are $80.
