About Rob

I hold a Bachelor of Music (Honours) and a Master’s degree in Music, as well as a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), and I am fully qualified to teach up to A-Level. Alongside classroom teaching, I have extensive experience preparing students for music theory exams, written papers, listening and analysis questions, and coursework in composition and performance. My tutoring journey has grown out of seeing how many capable students struggle not with music itself, but with confidence, clarity and exam technique. I specialise in breaking music theory and analysis down into manageable steps, explaining ideas clearly, and helping students feel calm and in control of their learning. I am particularly experienced in supporting students who feel overwhelmed, anxious or “not musical enough”, and helping them realise that they can succeed with the right guidance. Alongside my teaching, I have led school music departments, worked as an examiner and moderator, and supported students preparing for high-stakes assessments. This means I understand both how exams are marked and how to help students meet assessment criteria effectively. Above all, my approach is friendly, patient and encouraging. I aim to make lessons clear, supportive and enjoyable, while helping students build the skills and confidence they need to succeed independently.

A typical lesson with me is calm, structured and supportive, with a clear focus on what the student needs most that day. I always start by checking in briefly — what’s been covered recently, what feels confusing, and what’s coming up in class or in an exam — so the lesson is targeted rather than generic. Lessons usually follow a simple structure: Clarify the goal for the session (for example, understanding a topic in theory, tackling a set work, or improving exam technique). Teach and model ideas clearly using examples, visuals, or short listening extracts. Guided practice, where we work through questions or exercises together step by step. Independent practice, with support as needed, to build confidence. Review and next steps, so the student leaves knowing exactly what they’ve learnt and what to practise. Activities vary depending on the student and their course, and can include listening and analysis, short written tasks, theory exercises, composition planning, or exam-style questions. I often break tasks into smaller steps and use multiple explanations if needed, especially for students who find theory overwhelming. I tailor lessons by adapting pace, language and activities to suit each student’s confidence, learning style and exam board. Some students need reassurance and clarity; others benefit from challenge and stretching. I regularly adjust lessons based on feedback and progress, and I share simple practice tasks or revision tips so learning continues between sessions. Above all, lessons are judgement-free. My aim is to help students feel confident, capable and supported, while steadily building the skills they need to succeed independently.
