About Nupur
In a formative way, a teacher teaches me something, I study well, and I achieve a good grade, etc. But did I apprehend the material? Can I think independently and solve problems when something comes up that is slightly deviated from my past learning? Besides, time will delete some of the materials I learned. Because biomedical science is diverse and complex, it requires a good understanding of the subject. Lots of events look similar, but in reality, they are entirely different from each other. A notable example is the differential diagnosis in medicine. Based on the above fact, comprehensive knowledge is essential. In my opinion, teaching and learning are two different modes. In teaching, both the teacher and the learner have consent for learning, whereas understanding can be achieved without a teacher. Then why do we need a teacher? The teacher has the power of subjective assessment while customizing students' teaching needs. While pursuing my education and gaining ongoing teaching experience, I realized that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to teaching every student in the class. Based on the time allotted for a class and the curriculum setup in the syllabus, our target should be to meet the maximum students' apprehension about the teaching material. Our lectures should be self-explanatory while students develop interest. Unless we can create interest in learning, the fundamental goal of teaching cannot be completely met. On the students' side, I experienced students with difficulties comprehending the lecture or course material predominantly caused by a lack or deficiency in prerequisite knowledge required for the course. In such a situation, one of the most important lessons I have learned during my academic life is that skipping from the perception of biological events does not help in the ascending learning path. Based on my experience with my former mentors and teachers, as well as famous scientists and listening to several Nobel laureates' lectures, I realized that perpetuating knowledge with others is an art of communication. At the same time, listeners or learners must possess a minimum background knowledge. At my institution, students must take a qualifying test to enroll in a higher-level math class. I adopt a similar technique in my courses by taking a quiz in the first week of the semester. I suggest that students with poor grades in screening tests take a foundation course to improve their chances of succeeding in my class. In this experiment, I observed that students who took a foundation course achieved better grades than those who opted not to follow my advice.

Educational and 10+ years of teaching experience. Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC), Pittsburgh: Adjunct Professor (January 2015 – Current) Teaching Advanced Courses in Biology: Currently using Blackboard interface and remote learning through Zoom and Panopto. Course Description 1 (Microbiology): This course focuses on the biology of microbes and their impact on human health. The microbiology course is divided into two main sections. The course will begin with studying microbiology, including introductory chemistry, cell structure and function, microbial genetics, and the classification of different microbes. The second component of the course will focus on how bacteria interact with humans, how the human immune system is designed to combat infectious diseases, how epidemiologists track the spread of contagious diseases, and what types of antimicrobial medications are available to help fight off infectious diseases. We will conclude with an overview of selected infectious diseases, their symptoms, causative agents, pathogenesis, epidemiology, and treatment. The lab is designed to complement the lecture by training students in standard microbiology laboratory techniques and providing them with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience working with and observing microbes.
