About Amy
Graduated from Royal Northern College of Music with 2:1 BMus (Hons) in 2018 after studying with Peter Dixon, Lead Cellist at the BBC Philharmonic for four years.
After 2 years of freelance work and teaching in music education I joined the British Army as a Musician.
I was Co-leader cellist in the Countess of Wessex String Orchestra in the British Army where I performed solos for HM The King and other senior royal family members. Highlights include performing at the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and the King’s Coronation Concert to over 200,000 people. In my time I’ve worked closely with the BBC, many artists and celebrities and in prestigious venues such as The Royal Albert Hall and Buckingham Palace.
Throughout my career I have continued private teaching children and adults, whether it is for exams or for fun. I have a 100% pass rate with exams and understand both ABRSM and Trinity exam requirements.

My lessons will be centred around your goals and what you want to get out of your time with me. I take a very holistic approach in my cello lessons which includes your technique, understanding basic music theory, posture and relaxation as well as the psychological side of playing.
I think it’s important to understand playing the cello involves so much from your brain and body as well as the beauty of learning to play such a singing instrument. This is why my teaching style encompasses so much more than learning the cello.
I teach all abilities and all ages with the option of 30 mins, 45 mins and 60 mins.
For adults I recommend 45 mins plus, and young children 30 min lessons.

My daughter has been having cello lessons with Amy for around 6 months and has made really good progress. Most importantly she really enjoys the lessons and looks forward to them every week. Amy manages to strike a balance between keeping the lessons challenging enough to ensure learning and progression and also ensuring they are fun and engaging. Would recommend!
I've been receiving cello lessons from Amy for going on 3 years now from starting as a complete beginner, having never learned an instrument in my life. In that time I have gone from not even being able to read music to successfully tackling wide range of pieces. She is very encouraging and at the same time she can pick out exactly the adjustments needed to get more out of the instrument. She is also a very pleasant person and all my lessons have been a very enjoyable time even when my practice at home has faltered, the lessons are never a chore. She is always looking for new and interesting pieces that will encourage my growth with the cello and never lets being stuck on a particularly tricky technique become dull. All in all she is an exceptional tutor and I could not recommend anyone more highly.
I have been learning with Amy for the past two and a half years. After not playing the cello for more than 40 years since learning as a child, I was quite nervous about picking it up again. Amy has been wonderful. She gently helped me rebuild my skills from where I had left off all those years ago, always at the right pace and with endless encouragement.
What I appreciate most about Amy’s teaching is her rare combination of patience, exceptional musical ability, and the gift of teaching. Many talented musicians can perform brilliantly, but not all can explain and demonstrate techniques in a way that allows their students to truly understand and improve. Amy does this effortlessly. She breaks things down clearly, spots problems quickly, and always finds a way to help me overcome them.
A shared experience that sums up Amy’s teaching is our journey through Elgar’s Cello Concerto. When I started, I was simply trying to remember how to hold the instrument and read music again. With Amy’s guidance, I have progressed to playing the first movement of Elgar’s concerto. I certainly cannot play perfectly, but I can play it, and that is entirely down to Amy’s skill, patience, and encouragement. She has guided me through every note, finger position, bowing technique, and musical phrase, always with good humour and enthusiasm.
Amy has the patience of a saint, the musical skill of a professional performer, and the rare ability to pass on that knowledge effectively. I would recommend her without hesitation to anyone looking for an inspiring and highly skilled cello teacher.View more recommendations
