About Joel
Hello, I’m Joel! I am a community college tutor that specializes in languages. I have four years of experience working with adult learners in a college setting, and I am passionate about language learning and language exchange. I studied at the University of California in Santa Cruz and studied abroad for a year in Buenos Aires, Argentina. I was raised speaking English and using American Sign Language, and I learned Spanish as an adult. I am also learning Japanese! I have been in your shoes as a language learner, so I want to remind you that learning is always possible, and that I’m right there with you in that journey! I aim to make language learning a fun, accessible, patient, and expansive experience that gives you the opportunity to grow into new and multilingual ways of thinking! I’m looking forward to working with you!

I offer an introduction to Spanish speaking, writing, and reading for adult learners. My tutoring background involves four years of tutoring in a college setting. Therefore, I specialize in a tutoring approach that keeps andragogy (adult learning) in mind.
A typical beginning to our tutoring sessions would include a discussion of your goals, background, and motivation behind learning a new language.
I will ask questions about any exposure you have had to the Spanish language (even the most casual exposure counts!), and meet you at your level of familiarity.
We’ll balance learning grammar and vocabulary with conversation practice and other activities. I’ll be asking you questions throughout the session to make it interactive and prompt you to tie what we’re learning to your knowledge base and lived experience.
We’ll also look at examples of Spanish in song lyrics and other real-world scenarios.
My goal is to create a fun, patient, and interactive learning experience where we can all learn and grow together!
