About Dr Tymek

I have been tutoring professionally since 2014 for people of all ages. Recently, I completed my doctoral studies on twentieth century American poetry at University College London (UCL), and I balance private tuition with teaching at various London universities (UCL, Queen Mary's), working with a broad range of age groups and ability sets. Although my academic specialisation is in English Literature and poetry, I have previously tutored for a broad range of Humanities subjects and disciplines, including History, Geography, Linguistics, Philosophy and Critical Theory. So whether you need help close reading and criticising specific literary texts, a refresher on the historical and social contexts surrounding literature written in English, or help structuring, executing and fine-tuning your essay-writing skills, I'm here to help! My background also includes undergraduate study in English and Creative Writing at the University of Warwick (First Class) and an MA in Modern English Literature (Distinction) at UCL. I've also worked as the editor of the literary journal 'Moveable Type', and have spent time as a Visiting Scholar at Yale University in the United States (Jan-April 2019). I'm currently working on my first monograph about the link between politics and poetic form in American poetry after the Second World War, as well putting the finishing touches on my first novel.

I believe that a successful tutorial attends directly to the tutee's individual needs and their current level of learning. I always begin by agreeing upon a suitable plan of action with my tutees, establishing clear goals and breaking down the roadmaps for achieving them. My teaching approach is encouraging and empathetic, while also striving to constructively isolate core weaknesses and foreground key areas that need improvement. In general, my classes begin with a dialogue, where we collate our materials into a written form together (planning sheets, bullet-point lists, spider diagrams), with a view to completing homework assignments. I always make sure my tutees leave each tutorial with a clear, written record of what we have discussed, so that they can take what they have learnt back to their studies. For online tutorials, I use a combination of Zoom and Googledocs. This ensures the tutee and I can work on and edit written assignments in real time (especially if reviewing a piece of work is part of the tutorial's focus), allowing for a collaborative approach that is directed and frictionless. Interpersonally, I always try and bring a positive and dynamic energy to the tutorial, encouraging tutees to challenge received wisdoms and to develop their ideas through constructive debate. Every tutee is an individual, and my goal is that they will bring to their studies their own personal stamp, as well as achieving the best possible results!
