About Leah
I am an elementary teacher and have been teaching for 5 years. I have taught 3rd and 5th grade. Also, I was a substitute teacher while I was getting my masters in inclusive classroom education. I am TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language) certified and enjoy working with all students!

My name is Leah Braaten and I can provide lessons in math, reading, and writing for K-6 students.
My teaching approach is to create an engaging and individualized approach by getting to know your students hobbies, likes, and dislikes. Students are more engaged when education is revolved around their passions, goals, or dreams.
For math, I prefer to use three elements in my lessons: repetition, conceptual understanding, and simple steps. When students visualize the concepts of a math skill it is easier for them to understand the steps in a problem and repeat that skill.
For reading, lessons depend on the students ability and background. Literacy is made of three main components: fluency, comprehension, and phonemic awareness. Determining where the student excels or struggles is a good starting point for lessons!
For writing, I believe it is similar to speaking... you just have to try it and don't be afraid to babble! I love igniting a students creativity for a written piece. I believe in the workshop method, a student free writes and edits later. Receiving direct grammar lessons or essay format are important components, but if a student hates to write then they will always struggle with writing. They need to learn to love writing for the craft that it is!
