About Gregory
I never really liked math classes, and I especially don't like the way math textbooks are usually written. But somehow I went into electrical engineering and computer science and even ended up with a Ph.D.! I discovered, somewhere along the path, that I like what I can do with math and now I enjoy tackling professional design tasks, brain teasers, and all manner of mathematical problem solving.
It helps me to think of math as a board game; then math problems become fun as I move over the "board" on the way to the goal. I've also discovered that the more you know about a subject the less boring it becomes, and that's a tool that has gotten me through innumerable classes and meetings. I like passing these ideas on to students, and working to bring them up to speed in courses that are giving them a headache.

Math is a game! And just like any game, it's all about knowing where you're starting, where you want to end up, and having a list of the rules and tools (RATs) you can use to make each move. The art of math, like any game, is learning which moves will take you along a fast path to the answer that wins.
My lesson plans are tailored for each student, but usually consist of examining the lesson's topic, why this topic is useful, and reviewing the RATs we'll be using. Then we step gently into the topic and develop a feel for the right moves that gets us to the win.
I like to work with high school and undergraduate college students in introductory courses because this is where the most critical learning happens. If you can master algebra, geometry, and trig then you're ready to tackle anything that comes later. If you want to learn, even if math isn't your favorite subject, then I'd love to help.

The first half hour is free. During this half hour we get to know each other and evaluate where you are and what you'll need from me. From there, I'll build a lesson plan to address your needs. Of course, we can modify the plan as we both learn more.
